One more email or \u201cto-do\u201d that simply must get done. We say \u201cyes\u201d without weighing the trade-offs, skim across the surface of life, often wearing our busyness like a badge\u2014evidence that we\u2019re \u201cin the game.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI did 200,000 air miles last year. How many did you do?\u201d someone asked me not long ago, as though air miles could ever measure our worthiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But the wisdom to live well, to love well, and to lead well in a world with its foot permanently on the accelerator won\u2019t emerge from more speed. Rather the exact opposite.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It requires space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Reflection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #e02b20;\"><b>In a world addicted to <\/b><b>skimming the <\/b><b>surface<\/b><b>\u00a0at speed, making space to live more deeply<\/b><b>\u00a0has become a quiet act of rebellion.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Prioritizing\u2014<i>and then protecting<\/i>\u2014time to connect to the deeper wisdom that lives within us. To think more deeply about our toughest challenges so we can respond with clarity rather than react from overwhelm; with courage rather than anxiety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>So this year, walking my talk and \u201cleading bravely\u201d is not about doing more, and faster, but <i>doing less, but bette<\/i>r. It\u2019s putting into practice the title of one of my favorite books by John Mark Comer and pursuing the \u201crelentless elimination of hurry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Will I fall short? Probably by dinner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But as John Mark wrote in his book, \u201churry and love are incompatible.\u201d \u00a0And as I wrote in <span><a href=\"www.margiewarrell.com\/thecouragegap\">The Courage Gap<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #e02b20;\"><b>Lov<\/b><b>e is courage in its highest form. \u00a0And we get get cut off from love, the source of true wisdom, \u00a0when we fail to slow down sufficiently to access it.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Which is why this year I\u2019ve committed to being more intentional in my yeses \u2014to carve focused space for deeper thinking, a more grounded presence, so that I can make my most \u00a0meaningful contribution in our increasingly fraught, fractured, frenzied, and fearful world. And hopefully, bring a little more love, more light and more wisdom into the \u00a0dark places around us.<\/p>\n<p>But enough of me (though thank you for reading this far!).<\/p>\n<p><span>What about <i>you<\/i>?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul data-end=\"2487\" data-start=\"2204\">\n<li>\n<p role=\"presentation\"><span>What do you need to say no to so you can create space to think a little deeper, lead a little braver, and move through your days with more presence and less haste?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p role=\"presentation\"><span>And just as importantly, who will miss out over the longer arc of time if you don\u2019t? Beyond yourself, of course.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Because when we are racing through life at speed, it\u2019s not just others who miss out on our fullest presence and impact \u2014<span><i>it is us. <\/i><\/span>\u00a0Indeed, \u00a0in the hurried hurly-burly of life, we run the risk missing out on life itself.<\/p>\n<p><span>If nothing else, I hope you\u2019ll take a moment to take the deepest breath you\u2019ve had all day\u2014breathe in courage, breathe out fear, and get present to the ground beneath your feet and the beauty of your life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I also hope you&#8217;ll enjoy these few glimpses from my cruise down the Nile.
