One of the most special parts of my trip to Egypt was cruising down the Nile, watching life unfold on its banks the way it has for thousands of years.<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t help but think of how differently most of us live.<\/span><\/p>\n

The relentless pace. One more email or \u201cto-do\u201d that simply must get done. Trying to beat time and squeeze 30 hours out of 24.<\/span><\/p>\n

Spoiler: we can\u2019t.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It occurred to me that beneath what\u2019s become an almost pathological busyness lies a deeper, unfaced fear\u2014of being left behind, of missing out on the next opportunity, recognition, or \u201csuccess,\u201d at least by the world\u2019s yardstick.<\/span><\/p>\n

And so we push harder. We say \u201cyes\u201d without weighing the trade-offs, skim across the surface of life, often wearing our busyness like a badge\u2014evidence that we\u2019re \u201cin the game.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI did 200,000 air miles last year. How many did you do?\u201d someone asked me not long ago, as though air miles could ever measure our worthiness.<\/span><\/p>\n

But the wisdom to live well, to love well, and to lead well in a world with its foot permanently on the accelerator won\u2019t emerge from more speed. Rather the exact opposite.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It requires space.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reflection.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a world addicted to <\/b>skimming the <\/b>surface<\/b>\u00a0at speed, making space to live more deeply<\/b>\u00a0has become a quiet act of rebellion.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Prioritizing\u2014and then protecting<\/i>\u2014time to connect to the deeper wisdom that lives within us. To think more deeply about our toughest challenges so we can respond with clarity rather than react from overwhelm; with courage rather than anxiety.<\/span><\/p>\n

So this year, walking my talk and \u201cleading bravely\u201d is not about doing more, and faster, but doing less, but bette<\/i>r. It\u2019s putting into practice the title of one of my favorite books by John Mark Comer and pursuing the \u201crelentless elimination of hurry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Will I fall short? Probably by dinner.<\/span><\/p>\n

But as John Mark wrote in his book, \u201churry and love are incompatible.\u201d \u00a0And as I wrote in The Courage Gap<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n

Lov<\/b>e is courage in its highest form. \u00a0And we get get cut off from love, the source of true wisdom, \u00a0when we fail to slow down sufficiently to access it.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Which is why this year I\u2019ve committed to being more intentional in my yeses \u2014to carve focused space for deeper thinking, a more grounded presence, so that I can make my most \u00a0meaningful contribution in our increasingly fraught, fractured, frenzied, and fearful world. And hopefully, bring a little more love, more light and more wisdom into the \u00a0dark places around us.<\/p>\n
