The air was thick with smoke, the future uncertain, and fear felt as close as the ash falling softly around us.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\">I recall thinking,<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><em><span class=\"italic\">\u201cSurely nothing will eclipse this as the defining event of the year.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"font-[700]\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"font-[700]\">Huh.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"font-[700]\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">That day marked the beginning of an extraordinary chapter\u2014some experiences chosen, others thrust upon me\u2014which added a whole new dimension to my understanding of courage. Courage, I realized, isn\u2019t just about taking action despite fear. It\u2019s also about<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><strong><span class=\"font-[700]\">managing our fear so it doesn\u2019t override rational thinking, narrow our perspective, undermine our decisions, and paralyze us when we most need to act.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"font-[700]\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Research supports this. Studies* show that when we\u2019re gripped by fear, our<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><strong><span class=\"font-[700]\">sympathetic nervous system floods our body with cortisol and adrenaline<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"\">, narrowing our cognitive and emotional capacity to think clearly. But when we consciously regulate our emotional state, we can shift from reactive fear to intentional courage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">In short: managing our fear isn\u2019t about ignoring it\u2014it\u2019s about preventing it from hijacking our ability to respond wisely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr data-test-id=\"publishing-divider-block\" class=\"my-[3.2rem] mx-auto h-[1px] border-0 bg-black-a16\" \/>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<h3><span class=\"\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span class=\"\">Lessons from Fear, Uncertainty, and the Space Between Them<\/span><span class=\"\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Just months after the fires, as the pandemic tilted the world off its axis, my husband, Andrew, was hospitalized as one of Singapore&#8217;s first COVID patients, locked in their quarantine system for 30 days. At the same time, I was quarantined in our apartment with our son, Ben, while our other three children\u201410,000 miles away in the US\u2014found themselves suddenly homeless as dorms closed and borders slammed shut.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">For two years, I was unable to reach my mother in Australia as dementia slowly stole her away, separated by international travel restrictions and an overwhelming sense of helplessness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Yet it wasn\u2019t just my personal journey\u2014including relocating from Asia to the US in late 2020\u2014that deepened my understanding of courage. Over the last five years, I\u2019ve worked closely with high-achieving leaders across sectors\u2014from Fortune 500 boardrooms to political leaders in emerging democracies\u2014and I\u2019ve observed a striking pattern:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<blockquote class=\"w-auto\">\n<p><strong><span class=\"\">It\u2019s rarely a lack of skill, intelligence, or opportunity that keeps us stuck\u2014it\u2019s a deficit of courage.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"\"><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<hr data-test-id=\"publishing-divider-block\" class=\"my-[3.2rem] mx-auto h-[1px] border-0 bg-black-a16\" \/>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<h3><span class=\"\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span class=\"\">The Courage Gap: Why We Hesitate<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Time and time again, I\u2019ve seen incredibly capable people hesitate\u2014not because they didn\u2019t know what to do, but because they were afraid of what might happen if they did it.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\">Fear creates a gap:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\"><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"\">Between what we<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"italic\">could do<\/span><span class=\"\"><span>\u00a0<\/span>and what we<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"italic\">actually do.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"\">Between what we<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"italic\">need to say<\/span><span class=\"\"><span>\u00a0<\/span>and what we<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"italic\">actually say.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Some refer to this as the<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"italic\">know\/do gap<\/span><span class=\"\"><span>\u00a0<\/span>or the<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"italic\">think\/do gap.<\/span><span class=\"\"><span>\u00a0<\/span>I call it the<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">\u2018<strong>courage gap<\/strong>.\u2019<\/span><span class=\"\"><span>\u00a0<\/span>And learning how to close it is crucial\u2014not just for meeting our most pressing problems, but for realizing our most inspiring aspirations.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\">As Gandhi once said:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<blockquote class=\"w-auto\">\n<p><strong><span class=\"\">&#8220;The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world&#8217;s problems.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">The reality is that even the bravest among us can fall victim to fear. But courage doesn\u2019t mean the fear disappears. It means we move forward anyway.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr data-test-id=\"publishing-divider-block\" class=\"my-[3.2rem] mx-auto h-[1px] border-0 bg-black-a16\" \/>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<h3><span class=\"\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span class=\"\">Facing 2025 with Courage<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">As we stand on the cusp of a new year, uncertainty remains a constant. Whether it\u2019s in our careers, our relationships, or the broader world around us, fear will inevitably show up. But it doesn\u2019t have to lead the way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Over the last five years, I\u2019ve seen fear hold back leaders, innovators, and visionaries\u2014not because they lacked intelligence or insight, but because they overestimated the risks and underestimated their ability to handle them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Yet courage isn\u2019t about eliminating fear\u2014it\u2019s about choosing who you\u2019ll be in its presence.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Whether the flames are literal\u2014like those falling burnt leaves I saw five years ago\u2014or metaphorical, showing up as uncertainty, conflict, or doubt, courage remains our most valuable ally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">If those leaves taught me anything, it\u2019s this:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<blockquote class=\"w-auto\">\n<p><strong><span class=\"\">The world doesn\u2019t need your perfection.
