{"id":12925,"date":"2016-04-29T04:21:21","date_gmt":"2016-04-29T08:21:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/margiewarrellold.flywheelsites.com\/?p=12925"},"modified":"2016-04-29T04:21:21","modified_gmt":"2016-04-29T08:21:21","slug":"lift-as-we-climb-kilimanjaro","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/margiewarrell.com\/lift-as-we-climb-kilimanjaro\/","title":{"rendered":"Lift as we climb&#8230; up Mt Kilimanjaro"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"\"><span style=\"color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">&#8220;So what would be your ideal way to celebrate\u00a0your 50th birthday?&#8221; I asked my husband Andrew earlier this year. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\"><span style=\"color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">&#8220;Go on a safari with my family in Africa,&#8221; he replied.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\"><span style=\"color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">My fourteen-year-old son Ben piped up from the couch where I&#8217;d assumed he was in a\u00a0Youtube trance. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\"><span style=\"color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">&#8220;We can see lions at the zoo. I reckon we should climb Mt Kilimanjaro instead.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\"><span style=\"color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">We made a compromise. Climb a mere 5,865 meters (nearly 20,0000 feet) into the sky and THEN kick\u00a0back for a little lion-spotting!\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\"><span style=\"color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12932\" src=\"https:\/\/margiewarrell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/kili-corbis_1563951c.jpg\" alt=\"kili-corbis_1563951c\" width=\"460\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/margiewarrell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/kili-corbis_1563951c.jpg 460w, https:\/\/margiewarrell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/kili-corbis_1563951c-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/margiewarrell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/kili-corbis_1563951c-400x250.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><br \/>\nIt will take us 7 days to complete our ascent. On summit day we\u2019ll be exiting our tents\u00a0at midnight (why go to bed right?) to hike 8 hours to the summit and 6 hours back to the final night&#8217;s camp.\u00a0I&#8217;m highly confident\u00a0that at some point during\u00a0that 14 hours of oxygen-deprived climbing (they say the altitude&#8217;s the toughest\u00a0part) I will ask myself why on earth I ever thought hiking to the rooftop of Africa was a good idea.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\"><span style=\"color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">That said,\u00a0I am also supremely\u00a0confident that\u00a0in the months and years to come, as my kids\u00a0spread their wings even further, our gatherings will include plenty of tales\u00a0from our climb up one of the world&#8217;s seven summits. (Likely including how much mum whined about her sore legs.) Which is, in all honesty, why I am so glad we&#8217;ve signed up to do this because I can&#8217;t imagine a much more\u00a0&#8216;bonding&#8217; experience for our adventure loving family.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\"><span style=\"color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">But that is not why I am writing this blog post now. Rather I&#8217;m writing it to solicit your support. (Please don&#8217;t click away!)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\"><span style=\"color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Sure, we are climbing this mountain because it will be an incredible and defining experience for our family. However we know there are millions of families and people in the world, particularly in Africa, who could never imagine, much less afford, taking on such an endeavor. Scraping enough money together to feed themselves and their families occupies their daily lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\"><span style=\"color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">It is for this reason we have decided to &#8220;Lift As We Climb&#8221; and turn this family challenge into an opportunity to support people to climb their own personal mountains, and live their lives, with greater hope and courage. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\"><span style=\"color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">We&#8217;ve set the goal of raising $10,000 to support\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thp.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Hunger Project<\/a> who are doing groundbreaking\u00a0work in many communities across Africa, India and Bangladesh. <strong>One hundred percent<\/strong>\u00a0of the\u00a0money we raise will go to directly to fund The Hunger Project programs in Malawi that equip\u00a0women with the mindset and skills required to\u00a0provide for their families, mobilize their communities and forge a far brighter future than they would otherwise.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\"><span style=\"color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">To that end I am hoping you will consider supporting our efforts with a donation.\u00a0I know you&#8217;re \u00a0asked to donate to many other worthwhile causes so anything you would like to invest\u00a0will be hugely appreciate by me and ultimately by those\u00a0who have none of the opportunities you and I can so easily\u00a0for granted. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\"><span style=\"color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><br \/>\nHere is the <a href=\"http:\/\/thp.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link to donate and show your support.<\/a>\u00a0All donations are tax deductible.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12934\" src=\"https:\/\/margiewarrell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Kibera-Slum-Image-1-500x375.jpg\" alt=\"Kibera-Slum-Image-1\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\"><span style=\"color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">The final part of our time in Africa will be spent in Nairobi where we will be venturing into <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kibera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kibera slum<\/a> (above), home to over one million people and one of the worlds largest slums. While there we&#8217;ll be visiting the Women for Women in Africa\u00a0workshop\u00a0where I will run a workshop and visiting the Baraka school, which we also support as a family.
