Frankl, Holocaust Survivor<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What&#8217;s the good of hate. It only ruins you,&#8221;\u00a0Saba Feniger said\u00a0to me as she recounted her\u00a0arrival\u00a0at Auschwitz and\u00a0surviving\u00a0the Nazi death camps which claimed the lives of all but one family member.<\/p>\n<p>The utter inhumanity Saba and so many millions of\u00a0people experienced during\u00a0the\u00a0holocaust\u00a0is still, three\u00a0quarters of a century later, near impossible\u00a0to comprehend. How could civilised\u00a0people commit such atrocious acts? Equally so, how could this woman, born in\u00a0Poland in 1924, not be filled with absolute hatred for those who killed her family, stripped her dignity and stole her youth?<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vOLaF6QdIls\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Most of us have\u00a0heard many stories of the\u00a0holocaust via books, documentaries and movies. So many in fact that as passage of time grows longer, we&#8217;ve grown a little\u00a0desensitised to them.<\/p>\n<p>Yet we mustn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>Because for all our progress, there are millions of\u00a0people today who are being treated\u00a0with a lack of humanity and compassion; as that little-bit-less-human than the rest of us.\u00a0And not just in Syria or Somalia or\u00a0countries we consider foreign to our own. It is happening\u00a0right around us.<\/p>\n<p>Hate filled xenophobic rhetoric has become so common place that someone like Donald Trump, who speaks of banning Muslims from entering the US\u00a0and building walls with his &#8216;rapist&#8217;\u00a0neighbors, is rewarded for it.<\/p>\n<p>Closer to home, albeit in less confronting ways, it&#8217;s happening in our local communities, workplaces and the very places we often spend much of our time. Like on Twitter where\u00a0&#8216;trolls&#8217; seek to shame and shred the self-worth of others\u00a0in a vain\u00a0attempt to validate their own.\u00a0\u00a0And, sometimes, too often, it happens right in our own homes. Perhaps in subtler ways, but whenever anyone\u00a0is\u00a0left feeling harshly judged, neglected, pushed aside, unlovable or &#8216;less than&#8217; in some way there is a lack of compassion\u00a0and a presence of\u00a0suffering. Sometimes we just don&#8217;t see it because it would require admitting our own complicity.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s possible as\u00a0you read this now that feel this is all far removed from your own life. Yet I would challenge you to think about who in your daily orbit may not feel fully valued,\u00a0cared for or\u00a0heard?<\/p>\n<p>Of course it&#8217;s easy to be kind to those you really like. But what about those you don&#8217;t? What about those you have little in common with? What about those who dress differently, talk differently, pray differently?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I refuse to hate,&#8221; Saba said to me during our interview for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.RawCourage.TV\">RawCourage.TV<\/a>,\u00a0after recounting how her aunt died in her arms &#8220;nothing but bones.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I didn&#8217;t know any Hebrew\u00a0prayers for the dead so I just stood there,&#8221; she shared with me, the emotion as raw now as it was all those years ago. &#8220;That was her funeral.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I took many things from our conversation but most\u00a0valuable \u00a0of all was this:<\/p>\n<h3>Don&#8217;t\u00a0let the the hatred, small-mindedness\u00a0and the inhumanity of others be an excuse for your\u00a0own.<\/h3>\n<p>What about you?<\/p>\n<p>Where could you be more generous, more forgiving, more compassionate or simply more courageous despite how those around you are\u00a0behaving? \u00a0Sometimes living bravely is simply refusing to buy into the\u00a0fear,\u00a0blame and small mindedness\u00a0those around you.\u00a0And <strong>sometimes it&#8217;s having the guts to speak up and call\u00a0people out on it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While no one single\u00a0person can end racism, extremism, domestic violence or solve the plight of the millions of displaced people suffering the ravages of\u00a0war, we can all\u00a0take\u00a0responsibility for being the change we want to see in\u00a0the world.<\/p>\n<p>Albert Einstein once said:<\/p>\n<h2>&#8220;The world is not a dangerous place because of those who do harm, but because of those who look at it and do nothing.&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>What is the change you want to see more of in the people and world around you?<\/p>\n<p>While no one person can change the world, together we can do far more than we ever can alone. But we can&#8217;t do it by being pulled down to the level of those who want to build walls rather than bridges.<\/p>\n<p>Refuse to hate. Instead decide you&#8217;ll not only act with more compassion and humanity, but that you&#8217;ll stand up to those who no longer value it.<\/p>\n<p>It won&#8217;t only make the world around you that little bit better, it will make your inner world better too.
